Span and layers health check
Is our structure built for how big we are now? Span of control is how many people report to one manager. Too narrow, and a company carries layers it doesn't need; too wide, and managers have too little time for each person. The health check reads your live org chart and shows where you stand.
What it shows
- The share of managers with 4 to 10 direct reports
- Managers with a single direct report, often a layer that can go
- Managers with more than 10 direct reports
- Your number of management layers against what a company your size usually needs
What it needs: Your org chart, with reporting lines.

Questions
What is a healthy span of control?
Most organizational design practice treats 4 to 10 direct reports as healthy, depending on how similar the work is. A specialist team can run narrower; a team doing similar work can run wider.
Does it cost extra?
No. It is included on every Organization Viewer plan, including the free plan for up to 50 people.
